The Entry – First Impression of Your Home

Just like the old saying, “You only get one chance to make a first impression,” holds true for your home’s entryway.  The entryway is not only the first impression, it is an opportunity to create an experience.  One that is warm and welcoming to your guests. The entryway design should reflect your home’s overall style and personality, creating a flow into the house.

6 Considerations When Designing an Entry

  1. View
  2. Color
  3. Textures
  4. Pathway
  5. Roof Line and Columns
  6. Functionality

VEIW

The “view” has many considerations in and of itself, depending on the site.  If an urban lot there is not as many options as a multi-acer property.  The above image is a great example of leveraging nature’s view to create a dramatic entrance into the home.  Additionally, there is the view from the street, the front porch, and at the door.  No matter the view effect, it all begins with a well designed home by an architect who has an eye for creating an experience.

COLOR

The color includes the exterior, the door and the interior.  Blending all three sets the mood and creates a feel.  This includes the wall color, artwork, fixtures and flooring.  By tighing it all together, you set the stage for a grand entrance into your home.

FUNCTIONALITY

AN exterior should offer shelter.   – Definition of Shelter: something that covers or affords protection : protect or shield from something harmful, especially bad weather.

A building should convey a sense of shelter, refuge, or protection against the elements. Its inhabitants should never lack privacy or feel exposed and unprotected.

One of my secret weapons in design is… offering surprises.  This creates a very unique experience for your guests.  It will leave a lasting impression on their visit to your home.

Frank Loyd Write would design a low ceiling in the entry and then raise the ceiling as you walk in. Offering some surprise and delight on the way into a house or space.  The entry can be large small or just right but thought needs to be given to the experience of entry.

Design This – Not That

By incorporating a combination of the 6 considerations, you will create a lasting first impression and experience your guests will remember and look forward to on the return to your home.
